First Sacraments

✝️ Preparing for First Reconciliation and First Communion

A Journey of Faith in the Holy Rosary Parish Community

At Holy Rosary Burlington, we joyfully welcome children and families as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion. These sacred milestones are moments of grace and renewal, celebrated within the heart of our parish community.

👪 A Threefold Preparation: Family, School, and Parish

Preparation happens across three key pillars:

  • Family: Parents and guardians play the primary role in nurturing their child’s faith, leading by example in prayer, attending Mass, and engaging in spiritual conversations and at home preparation using online programs for this purpose.
  • School: Our Catholic schools offer foundational formation and help children understand the meaning and significance of the sacraments.
  • Parish: These sacraments are celebrated in the parish. All formal preparation and sacramental requests must come through the parish, not the school system. Further details about the parish preparation process will be outlined in our initial meeting in the Fall.

🗓 Who Is Eligible and When

First Reconciliation and First Communion are typically celebrated in Grade 2. Children who are older and have missed these sacraments may be required to undergo additional catechetical formation through the Rites of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC).

📅 Parent Involvement: Meetings and Petitions

  • A parent meeting will be held during the fall to guide families through the preparation process. At least one parent must be present.
  • During the first meeting, families will be invited to formally request the sacraments through a parish petition. Forms will be provided for this purpose.
  • Proof of baptism is required, and in some circumstances, pastoral intervention may be needed to address any obstacles to full communion, for example, children who are baptized in the Eastern Rites, or children who are baptized in other Christian Churches.

🙏 Living the Faith Daily

A vital part of preparation includes regular attendance at Sunday Mass and praying together at home. These practices create a spiritual rhythm that supports children in their journey toward reconciliation and receiving the Eucharist.

🔍 Questions and Guidance

Parents who have questions are encouraged to speak with our pastor, who will offer support and help navigate the process.

Issues of Pastoral Care and Concern

Please click on the Pastoral Care and Church Teaching tab on the main menu of the desktop version of this website for modern pastoral issues that need attention. We highly recommend speaking to Fr. Wilhelm if these issues exist for education and no pressure! Many issues can be more easily resolved than you think.
