Baptism

✝️ Preparing for the Sacrament of Baptism

A Journey of Faith, Family, and Belonging

Baptism is more than a ceremonial moment—it is the sacred beginning of a lifelong journey in the Catholic faith. At Holy Rosary Burlington, we are blessed to walk alongside families as they prepare to welcome their children into the community of believers through this foundational sacrament.

🍼 When and Where to Begin

The Sacrament of Baptism is typically celebrated in the parish where the family resides or has a registered connection. At Holy Rosary, infant baptisms are held on the last Sunday of each month (September to June), with special celebrations occasionally held during the Sunday Eucharist throughout the year.

To begin the process:

  • Pick up a baptismal registration form from the church entrance and submit it to the parish office.
  • Meet with the parish priest to discuss the responsibilities and ensure readiness to raise your child in the Catholic faith.
  • The priest will ensure that there is a reasonable probability that the child will be raised in the Catholic faith and may gently have a discussion around pastoral obstacles that may inhibit the parents from fulfilling their responsibilities.

🙏 Pre-Baptism Preparation

Before the baptism, parents and godparents are invited to attend a preparation session:

  • Reflect on the spiritual significance of baptism.
  • Learn about their responsibilities in guiding the child in faith.
  • Ask questions and gain insights into the baptismal ceremony.

These sessions foster community and deepen understanding, helping families embrace their roles with joyful commitment.

👪 Choosing Godparents

The Church views godparents as spiritual mentors. To qualify as a godparent, the person must:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Be a baptized and confirmed Catholic in good standing in the Church
  • Not be the biological parent of the child.
  • One male or one female sponsor or one of each
  • Ideally, be active in the Church and committed to guiding the child toward future sacraments like Confirmation

While non-Catholic Christians may participate as Christian witnesses, they cannot fulfill the canonical role of godparent. Non-baptized individuals may not serve as Christian witnesses or godparents.

❤️ Living the Faith

Baptism is the first step—it’s what follows that truly shapes the child’s spiritual life. Families are encouraged to:

  • Pray together regularly
  • Attend Mass faithfully
  • Be active in parish life and foster Catholic values at home
  • Baptism welcomes your child into the Church. But it’s your love and example that help them grow in Christ.
